Double Clip Lanyards for Conference Badges: A Buyer’s Guide

A well-designed name badge does little for networking when it keeps turning its blank side outward. In a Reddit discussion about conference badge size, participants raised exactly this problem alongside the choice between smaller and larger credentials. The useful purchasing question is not simply “Which size looks better?” It is “Will this complete badge-and-lanyard setup stay readable when someone actually wears it?”

When are two clips worth considering?

A single clip suspends the badge from one point. That leaves it free to rotate around the connection. A double-ended strap has one attachment at each lower end, connected to separate points near the top corners of the credential. The wider support can help control rotation, particularly on larger passes.

Consider this construction when delegates need to read each other’s names, when sponsor branding should remain visible, or when an exhibitor pass has a broad top edge. It is not an automatic upgrade for every event. A small existing holder with only one central slot may work more simply with one clip. Putting two hooks through that same slot does not create the separated support you are buying.

Measure the finished badge, not just the artwork file

Give both suppliers the same drawing or physical sample. State whether dimensions describe the printed insert, the holder’s internal usable space or its outside edges. These are different measurements. A holder advertised for a particular card size can still have a different top margin or slot arrangement.

• Width × height: measure the credential in its finished portrait or landscape orientation.
• Hole or slot dimensions: record both openings and the distance between their centers.
• Top-edge clearance: allow room for the hook to open and close without damaging the edge or covering important text.
• Insert access: check that two attached clips do not obstruct the opening if staff must insert a printed card at check-in.
• Combined weight: assess the strap with the actual credential and any agreed extras, not with an empty holder alone.

Run a wearer test before bulk production

Assemble one proposed strap, the selected clips and the final badge construction. Ask a colleague to wear it while walking, turning, sitting and standing. Check whether the two strap ends lie flat, whether either hook catches the holder, and whether the credential rests at a useful reading position.

Take front and side photographs and record the actual strap length, including how the supplier measures it. Compare with a single-clip sample if that is still a realistic alternative. This is a fit-and-usability check, not a certified strength or safety test. If the venue or employer requires a breakaway feature, specify that separately and confirm the required construction.

Printing the delegate’s name on both sides can also help readability if a badge turns. That is a badge-layout decision to coordinate with the printer, not a substitute for checking the attachment. Keep privacy and sponsor-layout requirements in the same approval round.

Quote the complete setup, not just “two clips”

A useful RFQ lists the material and width, finished strap length, artwork for each side, two selected clips, badge or holder dimensions, quantity per design, assembly scope and delivery destination. Ask whether the clips are supplied attached to the strap and whether holders arrive attached or packed separately.

For a mixed-role conference, one shared strap design with roles printed on the badge can avoid unnecessary lanyard artwork splits. That is a planning option, not a requirement. If you need separate custom strap designs, provide a quantity for each one rather than only a combined total.

Questions before ordering

Will a double clip lanyard completely stop a badge flipping?

No. Two separated attachment points can reduce rotation, but strap twist, movement, clip geometry and the badge itself still matter. Approve the complete sample rather than relying on a “no-flip” product name.

Can I keep the badge holders I already own?

Possibly. Send a photograph and measurements of the top attachment points. A two-slot holder may be suitable; one central slot is not the same configuration. Check fit before committing to the lanyard order.

Is this the right setup for every conference?

No. It is most useful when badge orientation is a priority and the credential supports two connections. If your current single-clip setup is readable, comfortable and easy to hand out, changing it may add components without solving a real problem.
